Separate one-time and repeat costs

A custom quotation may include design, prototypes, production tooling, trimming fixtures, inspection gauges and unit production. Ask suppliers to separate these items and state tool ownership, expected use, maintenance and revision assumptions.

A low tool price may support limited output or a simpler trim method; a more productive tool may cost more initially but reduce cycle and labor at volume. Compare the tool against the forecast, not as an isolated number.

Geometry drives tool complexity

Part size, cavity count, draw depth, radii, draft, undercuts and finish influence tool design. Tight tolerances, matching lids and complex trimming add work. Some visual features can be simplified without changing the customer experience.

Share expected annual and order quantities. They help the supplier choose between a development approach and a production tool sized for repeat output.

Starting gauge is only part of material cost

Thicker sheet generally adds material weight, but the cheapest result is not always the thinnest input. Deep cavities stretch the sheet; insufficient walls can buckle, crack or fail to retain the product.

Ribs, bridges, radii and flange design can create stiffness efficiently. Request options only after defining the performance test, because downgauging without a target shifts risk rather than engineering cost out.

Yield, trim and scrap influence the unit price

The usable sheet area depends on part footprint, cavity spacing and trim. Wide flanges, irregular outlines and inefficient layouts can increase material per accepted part.

Ask whether price includes scrap assumptions, recycled regrind where suitable, inspection rejects and secondary trimming. Quotations using different finished dimensions are not directly comparable.

Volume, changeovers and packing matter

Short runs spread setup, heating, changeover and inspection across fewer parts. Larger orders may improve unit economics but add inventory. Request price breaks based on realistic release quantities.

Nesting, cartons, protective bags and freight can materially affect landed cost. A light tray that ships mostly air can be more expensive than expected.

Ask for costed alternatives

A strong supplier can compare material, gauge, cavity arrangement, trim and tooling routes while keeping the performance target constant. Ask what each alternative changes and what must be retested.

Freeze the product revision, annual demand, order size, material requirements, packed configuration and inspection scope before comparing final quotes.
