Match the tray to the sales and distribution model
A national retail accessory, a direct-to-consumer device and a service component require different packaging. Map assembly, fulfillment, parcel or pallet transport, retail handling, returns and opening. The tray, carton, label and shipping case must work as one system.
Canada's long routes and varied seasonal conditions make realistic distribution inputs important. Record whether the pack will travel in mixed loads, remain in an unconditioned warehouse or be repeatedly opened for inspection.

Build the specification around the electronics
Provide maximum and minimum product dimensions, weight, center of gravity and production revision. Identify screens, ports, polished housings, controls, cables and fragile projections. A cavity designed around one perfect sample may become too tight when real parts vary.
Define permitted movement and removal force. Surface protection and ESD control are separate requirements: a static-control tray can still scuff a housing, and a cosmetically gentle tray may not provide required electrical behavior.

Plan for climate and complete-pack testing
Materials and retention features can respond differently to temperature. Cold may influence toughness or flexibility; heat can affect dimensional stability. Use the actual route to set conditioning, not a broad claim that a material is suitable for Canadian weather.
Where relevant, condition the complete pack and then check fit, impact, vibration, compression and removal. Document the product, tray, carton and test configuration so later revisions can be compared.

Compare material and environmental objectives carefully
Recycled content, reduced plastic use and recyclability are useful objectives, but a resin name alone does not prove local acceptance. Collection systems, labels, adhesives, color and the complete pack structure matter.
Request the material construction, starting gauge, supporting documentation and formed samples. If lightweighting is a goal, ask whether ribs, flange design or cavity geometry can provide stiffness with less material while protecting the product.

Compare landed value and approve the packed sample
For imported trays, compare tooling, unit price, packing density, freight, duties, brokerage, storage and inventory risk. Request carton size, weight, units per carton and pallet assumptions. Efficient nesting saves volume only if trays still separate reliably on the line.
Before release, inspect a representative packed sample for fit, removal, stacking, carton compatibility and appearance. Fix the material, revision, inspection criteria and packing method in the approval record.
