Start with requirements, not a resin preference

A clear retail blister, opaque transport tray and static-control electronics tray solve different problems. Define visibility, stiffness, impact, draw depth, temperature, closure, recycled-content goals, markets and volume before naming a polymer.

Grades, colors, finishes and additives within one resin family can matter as much as its name. End-of-life claims also depend on local collection and the complete pack, including labels, adhesives and coatings.

PET for clear retail presentation

PET is commonly evaluated for clear blisters, clamshells and trays. It can provide useful transparency and stiffness, but deep draws, tight radii and uneven forming affect final thickness and appearance.

If sealing to card or lidding, test the complete material and coating combination on the intended equipment. Do not assume every PET grade shares the same sealing window.

RPET for documented recycled content

RPET describes PET sheet containing recycled material but does not state the percentage, source or construction. Specify the target and evidence. Some sheets use recycled and virgin layers to balance processing and appearance.

Review tint, haze, lot consistency, minimum quantities and supply. Consumer-facing claims should reflect documented content and applicable local guidance.

PVC and market-specific considerations

PVC has established clarity and forming behavior in some blister systems. However, brand, retailer or market policies may restrict it, so acceptance must be checked for the destination.

Changing from PVC to another resin is not a simple name substitution. Forming, density, stiffness, shrinkage and sealing may change, and the geometry or tool may need revision.

PS for opaque internal trays

Polystyrene is often evaluated for opaque inserts and component trays where visibility is not required. It can offer stiffness and crisp detail with color options.

Assess impact and temperature performance for the actual grade, gauge and geometry. Standard PS should not be assumed to provide static control; specify an engineered material if electrical behavior is needed.

Compare finished-package cost and approve the exact construction

Resin price per kilogram is not total package cost. Density, required gauge, trim efficiency, cycle, scrap, freight and packing-line behavior all matter. Compare quotations against the same finished dimensions and acceptance criteria.

Approve the grade or controlled equivalent, gauge and tolerance, color, finish, recycled-content requirement, key dimensions and change notification. Test the formed part for fit, clarity, nesting, sealing and complete-pack performance.

Is RPET always better than virgin PET?+

Not for every appearance, processing or supply requirement. Evaluate the documented grade against the project.

Which material is clearest?+

PET and PVC grades can be clear, but sheet quality, tool finish, draw and process also control the final view.

Can a PVC tool run PET?+

Possibly, but direct substitution should not be assumed. Forming, release, shrinkage, fit and sealing require review and sampling.

Are these materials recyclable everywhere?+

No. Collection and sorting vary by location, and package design affects the available pathway.
